This prerequisite course is exclusively for applicants of the 10th Global Capacity-Building Workshop on GCED. It provides foundational knowledge of Global Citizenship Education (GCED), within the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It introduces GCED’s core principles, pedagogical approaches and its role in fostering sustainable and peaceful futures.   Application Deadline: JUNE 27 2025, 11:59PM (KST)   Eligibility: Global Educators from the 2025 ODA recipient countries, with a minimum of three years(at least five years remaining until retirement) of professional experience who have successfully completed this prerequisite course.   Estimated Course Duration: 80 minutes (Includes 7 lecture videos + 1 discussion task, where participants post their reflections and opinions)

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in curriculum design for Global Citizenship Education (GCED), emphasizing transformative learning, peacebuilding, and critical pedagogy. It analyses various theoretical perspectives on education’s societal role and examines innovative teaching methods suited for both formal and non-formal contexts. Alternative perspectives on "21st-century" educational challenges, including AI, digital pedagogy, and "global competencies" will also be explored to propose strategies that yield inclusive and transformative curricula integrating values, principles, and practices of GCED.   Finally, participants will integrate GCED concepts and values relevant to their own work, whether as an independent subject/course/workshop or integrated into an existing curriculum. While this course has been designed with a significant emphasis on the "educational" dimensions of GCED, the course will be equally useful to non-teachers and non- professional educators.   The course will consist of four “classroom” weeks. The course will open with a lecture or PowerPoint presentation or video clips followed by Forum discussions. Participants are expected to check the course site at the beginning of every course week to be aware of the requirements for the week.

APCEIU launched the Korea-Japan Teachers’ Training Workshop on GCED in 2021, offering various sessions to enhance the participants’ GCED competencies as well as to foster global citizenship. Since then, participants have engaged in varied activities, including collaborative lesson plan development, online seminars, joint classroom projects and student exchanges.   In 2025, a new batch of teachers from the two countries will be invited to join the Network along with the existing members. To reach out to new teachers, APCEIU collaborates with the Japan Association of International Education (JAIE), Okayama University and Sophia University. Korea-Japan Teachers’ Network on GCED provides a training workshop for the participating teachers, which will be followed by the continued learning and interactive activities among the participants such as online seminars and case studies. In particular, teacher-centered learning communities within the Network are strongly encouraged for their mutual learning and interaction. The support for these teachers’ communities aims to provide a space for teachers to learn together, to broaden the perspective on GCED both as a teacher and a global citizen, and to reflect and grow together. Continuing the effort of enhancing mutual understanding among teachers and expanding their GCED practices, the Network aspires to contribute to building a culture of peace between Korea and Japan. 

Since the 1960s, awareness of an "environmental crisis" caused by human activities has grown globally. While the myriad of problems due to environmental destruction has worsened, there is now universal consensus that “climate change” is one of the most urgent threats facing the survival of humanity. Given GCED’s vision to promote education and action to build a holistic culture of peace based on values, principles and strategies of sustainability, the “climate crisis” is hence an indispensable theme in GCED programs. This online course seeks to explain the causes and effects of climate change and clarifies alternative paradigms of “sustainable development” The role of international policy and administrative institutions to undertake climate action, such as UNFCCC and COP, will be highlighted. Drawing on critical perspectives and social movements led especially by grassroots civil society organizations and communities, the course also seeks catalyze personal and social action for climate justice   PRE- or CO-REQUISITE COURSE: GCED101: Introduction to GCED

This 5-week course covers a basic introduction to human rights principles, standards and mechanisms, discussion of specific issues related to GCED from a human rights perspective, and an understanding of the teaching of human rights in relation to GCED issues. After taking this course, participants will be able to explain basic principles of human rights, discuss GCED issues from a human rights perspective, and expound on issues and systems of teaching human rights. Week 1 : Society, History, Culture and Human Rights Week 2 : International Human Rights Standards Week 3 : GCED Issues Affecting Human Rights Week 4 : Realizing Human Rights and GCED Week 5 : Building Sustainable Communities Various materials such as articles, videos, and documents from the United Nations, national/local governments, other institutions, and also individuals' are utilized for this Online Course. This course serves as a prerequisite for those seeking to engage in Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Through a series of lectures by renowned experts, interviews with scholars and practitioners, and case studies from diverse contexts, learners will develop foundational knowledge and skills essential for understanding and applying GCED and SEL principles. The course aims to explore core concepts, pedagogical approaches, and real-world applications of GCED and SEL at local, national, and global levels. It provides a platform for learners to critically reflect on educational challenges, equity, and inclusivity, fostering a deeper awareness of their roles as educators and global citizens. By the end of this course, learners will be able to: Understand the fundamental principles of GCED and SEL Recognize the importance of social-emotional competencies in fostering inclusive and just societies Prepare for advanced courses in GCED and SEL by building a strong conceptual and practical foundation This course is designed for educators, advocates, and aspiring change-makers who seek to integrate GCED and SEL into their teaching, leadership, or community initiatives. In particular, applicants for 11th Youth Leadership Workshop on GCED should complete this prerequisite course before the Pre-Workshop.
